The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was voted German Car of the Year 2022. It is therefore not surprising that the electric car from Korea prevails over competitors from home and abroad.

The jury of the German Car of the Year has chosen and again an electric car has become the best vehicle in 2022. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was able to outperform strong competitors like the Porsche 911 GT3, the Audi E-Tron GT, a Peugeot 308 or the sister model Kia EV6. The other vehicles had each won their individual class and so the Porsche 911 GT3 prevailed in the sports car category, while the Audi E-Tron GT won the luxury segment. In the compact car category, the new Peugeot 308 won, the Kia EV6 dominated the premium segment and the eventual overall winner won the New Energy category. “To receive such a prestigious award in such a strong environment is of course a great honor for Hyundai”, Wang Chul Shin, President of Hyundai Motor Germany, is delighted, “at the same time, this is the next proof that we have succeeded in an extraordinary vehicle with the Ioniq 5. Technically, the 4.70-meter-long Kia EV6 is closely related to the 4.63-meter-long Hyundai Ioniq 5, with which it shares far more than the new E-GMP electrical platform. Like the Porsche Taycan, the Korean also works with a voltage of 800 instead of the usual 400 volts. Among other things, this ensures significantly faster loading times. The batteries should be charged from ten to 80 percent within 20 minutes, and the Ioniq should travel 100 kilometers with five minutes of charging time. As an extra, Hyundai offers a solar roof which, under optimal conditions, produces over 1,500 kilometers of additional range per year. There is also the option of bidirectional charging. The Ioniq 5 does not feed into the power grid, but instead delivers power to another car or to an electrical device. In other words: electric drills, notebooks or the like can be operated via the on-board network of the Ioniq.

Hyundai offers the Ioniq 5 with either all-wheel or rear-wheel drive. You can choose between two batteries. The smaller one has 58 kWh and provides 125 kW / 170 PS and a torque of 350 Nm with the electric motor. With all-wheel drive, that’s enough for an acceleration of 6.1 seconds from standstill to 100 km / h and for a top speed of 185 km / h. The 72.6 kWh storage unit delivers a system output of 225 kW / 305 PS and 605 Nm torque, which, as is usual with electric cars, is available from the first engine revolution. With all-wheel drive it only takes 5.2 s to 100 km / h and also reaches a top speed of 185 km / h. The maximum range of the large rear-wheel drive vehicle: 481 kilometers. The electric motors are located directly on the driven axle.

In the spacious interior, the Ioniq 5 has an airy center console that can be moved 14 centimeters and a head-up display that projects important data onto the windshield in front of the driver. Information is provided by two 12.25-inch displays. They are clear and easy to read. The three-meter wheelbase, together with the thin backrests of the front seats, also provides ample space in the rear. The rear seat can also be moved electrically by up to 13.5 centimeters. That leaves a choice: more space for passengers or more for luggage. The backrests can be folded down in a 60:40 ratio. The trunk volume itself is Hyundai with 527 up to 1591 liters. There is also a small trunk at the front, the volume of which is between 25 and 57 liters, depending on the type of drive. The entire interior is premium and, according to Hyundai, should be sustainable. The seats are clad in leather that has been dyed and treated with vegetable oil extracts from linseed. Textiles are made from sustainable fibers such as organic sugar cane, wool and plant-based yarn. The floor mats are made from a material obtained from recycled fishing nets and other waste collected from the world’s oceans. The prices start from 41,990 euros for the rear-wheel drive version with 58 kWh battery power. The current top version with all-wheel drive and 72.6 kWh starts at 48,900 euros. As is common with Hyundai, the Koreans give the Ioniq 5 a full eight-year guarantee with unlimited mileage and at no additional cost.
