In the summer of 2020, the Penny supermarket chain closed its branch in the Stein district of Geretsried. But now there are signs of a revival of the local supply: A village shop is to open in Stein. Mayor Michael Müller (CSU) announced this on Saturday. On the day of urban development promotion, the association for youth and social work in Geretsried, together with the city of Geretsried, invited to a colorful program under the motto “We in the district”. From Karl-Lederer-Platz, the participants went to Stein, then to Neuer Platz and finally to Johannisplatz in order to experience the city’s economic and structural developments directly.
In front of the district management in Stein, Müller took the opportunity to announce the plans for a new local supply in the district. He welcomed the Pedatella family, who intend to set up a village shop in the premises of the former pharmacy. At the same time, the mayor appealed to the population to take advantage of the future offer. “The Penny didn’t close because there was too much sales,” he recalled. After 24 years, the only local supplier in the southernmost quarter of the city had closed, which hit the approximately 2,500 people living there hard. “For economic reasons” the company had not extended after the end of the lease term. Müller thanked the Pedatella family for their entrepreneurial courage and welcomed their initiative to ensure the supply of everyday items via a village shop. The city, in turn, wants to set up an info point there so that citizens have a service point of contact. There is already one in the district meeting place, but the different opening times complement each other, says Müller.
