Georgia – Saakashvili arrested – Politics

Shortly before the local elections in the South Caucasus Republic of Georgia, the former President Mikhail Saakashvili, who was wanted by arrest warrant, returned to his homeland – and was arrested. Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Friday evening on Georgian television. “I would like to inform the population that the wanted third president of Georgia has been arrested.” Saakashvili had previously said that he had arrived in the Georgian port city of Batumi on the Black Sea. The politician convicted of abuse of office had called for protests.
