George Santos, imposter in the US Congress, is defiant but realistic: “I’m not going anywhere!” said the controversial Republican in one Livestream on X, the former Twitter about the countless demands for his resignation that have been pouring in on him for months. Nevertheless, he assumes that his fellow parliamentarians will throw him out of the US House of Representatives in the coming days.

Will Santos become the sixth MP to go?

“I know that I will be excluded if the resolution comes to a vote. I have calculated it over and over again, but it doesn’t look good,” Santos continued. When exactly this meeting will take place is unclear. But probably soon , when lawmakers return to Washington from Thanksgiving break. If Santos has to leave, he would become only the sixth lawmaker in U.S. history to be expelled from the House chamber.

The 35-year-old New Yorker from Long Island has been in Parliament since the beginning of 2023 and was making headlines even before he began his duties almost consistently provided false information about his life, finances and career. He “brazenly” “stole” from his campaign funds, according to a report by the Ethics Committee. Among other things, he is said to have spent campaign funds on the purchase of luxury items from the Hermès fashion house, on visits to casinos, weekend trips and Botox treatments.

Investigations by the dozen

In the report, investigators support the allegations against Santos with “substantial evidence.” They recommended turning his case over to the Justice Department, the top U.S. prosecutor. In addition, investigations are already underway against him on almost three dozen counts, including serious identity theft.

The accused himself admitted publicly a few months ago that he was a “terrible liar, but the criminal allegations were all “a disgusting, politicized slander intended to force him out of office.” In the three-hour X livestream, he made serious allegations Accusations against other members of parliament and at the same time sank into self-pity: he himself was the “it girl” of the Republicans and now the “Mary Magdalene of the US Congress“. His colleagues, on the other hand, had committed far worse crimes than he did. “There are a lot of criminals in these ranks,” said Santos.

George Santos doesn’t want re-election

In view of the allegations against him, Santos announced some time ago that he would not run for re-election. However, he wants to keep his mandate until the end of the legislative period in January 2025. “You have to understand that it’s done when I want it done, not when they say it is done,” he said now. His wish will probably not be granted.
