According to information from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman Apple wants to integrate new AI functions into iOS, Siri, Apple Music and other applications. Gurman reported that Apple was caught off guard by the surge in popularity of AI tools like ChatGPT this year.
Now Apple’s top executives are pushing teams to add AI features to catch up with the competition. According to Gurman, new AI-powered features are planned for iOS 18. This includes smarter autocomplete and suggested replies in messages.
With annual spending of around $1 billion on AI research and development, Apple wants to equip its ecosystem with new intelligence.
Apple’s senior vice president Eddie Cue is also pushing for AI features in Apple Music, according to the report. Specifically, Apple Music will receive AI-generated playlists. Apple also plans to use generative AI in its productivity apps like Pages and Keynote.
Siri is said to be thanks to Apple Manager’s AI team John Giannandrea receive a new intelligence. Gurman wrote that a smarter version of Siri should be released next year.
Developer tools could also become AI compatible
In addition to the functions for end users, Apple wants to equip its developer tools with intelligent AI functions. Gurman said Apple is exploring AI code completion capabilities for Xcode, similar to Github Copilot. The internal Apple Care systems could also be supported by AI to optimize support workflows.
According to the report, there is a debate at Apple about whether AI functions should run on-device or through cloud servers. Running on the device increases data protection, while the cloud expands the technical possibilities. Gurman expects Apple to decide on a case-by-case basis.
