Generalized drop in crime in Paris and its inner suburbs

What if the savagery of society, dear to Gérald Darmanin, was also a victim of the coronavirus pandemic? This audacious hypothesis (not scientifically proven) is based on the latest crime figures provided by the Paris police headquarters (PP). And between 2019 and 2021, the drop is notable. “Property crimes are thus down by 22% and those relating to violence against people by 3%,” said the PP in a press release.

In detail “the number of burglaries decreased by 14% in the Paris agglomeration, vehicle thefts by almost 8% and thefts of two-wheelers by 20%”, adds the text. Which is still impressive. But not as much as the number of pickpocketings, which has fallen by 27% in two years. “In Paris, these figures represent almost a third less pickpocketing compared to 2019, i.e. more than 18,000 victims spared”, welcomes the PP. The only downside is the 5% increase in scams, linked according to the police, to the increase in cyber-delinquency.

Increase in acts of sexual violence

Finally, with regard to violence against people, “villainous physical violence decreased by -24.3% compared to 2019”, with two sharp drops in Paris (-27%) and in Seine-Saint-Denis (-24%) while the homicide rate remains stable. In addition, “acts of sexual violence have been rising steadily since 2019 and will increase by +25% in 2021. Intra-family violence, such as domestic violence, increases by 17%, ”said the press release. For the PP, this increase is explained by “the freedom of speech for women, particularly in matters of domestic violence, which is accompanied by an increase in complaints”.
