GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Suprim X: MSI tames up to 480 watts with 2.1 kg in the 3.5-slot design

The MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Suprim X has a TDP of up to 480 watts, which requires a very large 3.5-slot design weighing 2.1 kg and an extremely complex cooling solution with a high use of materials. The next smaller model, the GeForce RTX 3090 Suprim X (test), is clearly overshadowed.

480 watts have to be supplied and cooled

With the successor to the GeForce RTX 3090 Suprim X (test), which comes with a standard TDP of 420 watts (+ 70 watts), MSI will increase the TDP ex works to 480 watts (+ 30 watts) and recommends again for the energy supply 3 × 8-pin power supply with 1,000 instead of 850 watts nominal power.

The new 12(+4)-pin connector 12VHPWR according to PCI Express 5.0, which can provide up to 600 watts, is supposed to take care of the power supply for the graphics card. However, the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti will always come with an adapter for three 6+2 pins.

With a higher GPU clock, higher memory speed and higher TDP, the 3090 Ti Suprim X is a completely different house number than the 3090 Suprim X.

3090 Suprim X → 3090 Ti Suprim X
  • 3×8 pin (PCIe 4.0) → 1×16 pin (PCIe 5.0)
  • 1860MHz → 1880MHz (default mode)
  • 1875MHz → 1900MHz (Extreme Performance)
  • 420 watts standard TDP → 480 watts standard TDP
  • 850 watt PSU recommended → 1,000 watt PSU recommended
  • 24GB GDDR6X 19.5Gbps → 24GB GDDR6X 21.0Gbps
  • 10,496 CUDA cores → 10,752 CUDA cores

In order to cope with these specifications and in particular the resulting waste heat, MSI relies on a particularly complex cooling solution, which once again clearly surpasses the already massive concept of the 3090 Suprim X.

Cooling solution with more use of materials

The website VideoCardz would now like to have received photos of the MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Suprim X from my own sources, which show the graphics card in direct comparison with its “little” brother, the MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Suprim X.

The 3 slot design grows to a 3.5 slot design and now has 200 grams more weight on the ribs. The manufacturer’s latest spearhead weighs a total of 2.1 kg and has a significantly larger I/O shield that offers a total of three DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.1.

Loud VideoCardz the MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Suprim X should be available from March 29th at an unknown price. On this day, the sales start of all other custom designs should also take place.

The watt arms race has begun

A TDP of around 500 watts without a mod should not mean the end of the road for the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. At least the EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti K|NGP|N, which can theoretically absorb up to 1,275 watts via 2× 16-pin and the PCIe slot, should be even higher. According to the currently increasing rumors about the RTX 4000 generation, the RTX 3090 Ti can generally be understood as the first test run of such high power consumption.
