Gas station murder in Idar-Oberstein

On September 18, 2021, Mario N., heavily intoxicated, shot the 20-year-old employee of a gas station with a revolver in the Rhineland-Palatinate city. The motive for the indictment was anger about the infection protection rules in force at the time. The 50-year-old “wanted to set an example” after gas station employee Alex W. was said to have pointed out the obligation to wear mouth and nose protection in the sales room. The shooter admitted the crime during the course of the hearing and expressed his regret. The murder had caused outrage across the country.

With its murder verdict, the district court followed the pleadings of the public prosecutor and the private prosecutor. The defense had asked for a manslaughter conviction.

The verdict is not yet legally binding.
