When trains full of tanks roll, artillery fires during maneuvers at the border, then power becomes visible to all the world. Much more visible than that power that lies at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, than tubes that meander through Europe. Russia’s gas pipelines have long been part of the war scenario designed by Moscow; they are a shackle for Germany and the EU. The conflict over eastern Ukraine has made them feel dependent on Russian gas.
