Garcia sweeps Andreescu, Moutet passes first week

The US Open is a separate Grand Slam. The proof, the France of tennis is doing rather very well. Caroline Garcia and Corentin Moutet qualified for the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows by defeating Andreescu and Cachin respectively.

Intractable and very confident, Garcia (17th in the world) totally dominated the 2019 winner Bianca Andreescu (48th). “I’m very happy with the way I played and to be in the second week. It was a very committed match. Lots of rallies… Each point, each game was very intense”, welcomed the Frenchwoman, after sweeping the Canadian 6-3, 6-2 in 1h27. In the round of 16, the former world N.4 will face the American Alison Riske (29th).

Moutet, first

If Caroline Garcia reaches this stage of the competition for the first time in New York, Corentin Moutet, 112th in the world and drafted from the qualifications, will play for the first time in his career in the round of 16 of a Major.

For this, he overcame the Argentinian Pedro Cachin (66th) 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. At 23 and for his fifth participation, he will face the Norwegian Casper Ruud (5th), finalist of the last Roland-Garros, with the key to a place in the quarter-finals.

If Moutet fought 3h17 to dismiss Cachin, notably coming back from 0-4 in the fourth set before winning, his next opponent had even more difficulty to be there. Ruud indeed took 4h23 to beat the American Tommy Paul (34th) in five sets, 7-6 (7/3), 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/2), 5-7 , 6-0. Then maybe ?
