Garbage – Germans produce quite a lot of garbage – economy

People in Germany produce more waste than citizens in most other EU countries. This is the result of data from the statistics agency Eurostat on municipal waste. According to this, every person in Germany disposed of an average of 632 kilograms of waste in 2020; that was 67 kilograms more than in 2005. In 2020, only people in Denmark (845), Luxembourg (790) and Malta (643) produced more waste. Eurostat writes that the differences in waste reflect different consumption patterns and also the countries’ economic wealth. There are also differences in how waste is collected and what counts as municipal waste apart from household waste. Almost a third of this waste has been recycled.
