Gamsbartbinder in Ebersberg: on the trail of poachers – Ebersberg

Chamois beards were once an expression of protest against the authorities. Today they are more of a luxury item, there are only a few who make them. Jakob Weiss from Ebersberg is one of them.

You have to duck your head a bit if you want to visit Jakob Weiss these days. Over the winter, the Ebersberger settled in the historic house with the low ceilings at Lehrer-Schwab-Gasse 6 in Ebersberg to pursue a craft that has become rare: tying a chamois beard. A pleasant warmth surrounds you in the farmhouse parlor, Weiss has just put more wood in the stove. “The house gives me an amazing calmness,” he says. “I walked in here and felt good.” He points to the angel in the corner, the small windows, the rounded corners. “For me, that is the epitome of home.”
