Gaming on the mini projector: Samsung brings new FreeStyle

The handy mobile projector FreeStyle is not only recommended for the movie night, but now also wants to appeal to gamers. For this, Samsung has given it the gaming hub known from TVs and monitors from the manufacturer. You can use it to quickly find your favorite games and have an overview of the appropriate menu settings. Of course, the projector is also smart and offers the usual streaming apps for Netflix & Co., which can be called up directly on the screen. It integrates 5-watt speakers and its remote control has a microphone for voice control via Bixby or Alexa.

The projector automatically adjusts the image projected onto the wall so that a right-angled projection is obtained. For a movie night, two projections can be seamlessly joined together to form an oversized 21:9 image. This only works when playing from a smartphone, because the device itself only has one HDMI input. The image is mirrored from the small display onto the screen with the Smart Things app, which is available for Android and iOS or AirPlay 2. According to Samsung, the so-called Smart Edge Blending currently only works with still images on iOS devices, for videos that are joined together you need an Android smartphone from Samsung. The two projectors are recognized by the smartphone as a single device. You can also stack the two images on top of each other and project them for portrait social media content. The setup works using test patterns that are photographed to determine the position

If you use The FreeStyle 2 outdoors, you can transmit the sound to several headphones at the same time via Bluetooth. That way you don’t disturb the neighbors with a loud action film. Samsung recommends the Full HD projector for screen diagonals between 30 and 160 inches, i.e. projection diagonals from 75 centimeters to a good 4 meters; from two meters, the projector replaces a 75-inch display. According to Samsung, the non-replaceable LED light source lasts at least 30,000 hours; That’s theoretically enough for four hours of film every day for over 20 years. Samsung is asking 1000 euros for the new FreeStyle; the device from last year is now available for less than half. c’t had tested the previous model.
