Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof: The department store deserves a future – economy

Essay by

This is where the desire to consume that has become home should flourish again. Winter jackets and stockings and plates and bedclothes and perfume bottles, illuminated by new ceiling lights, staged, hung, placed. The aisles have recently been wider in the Kaufhof at Frankfurter Hauptwache, which is no longer called that. Behind the entrance on the ground floor you are welcomed by the familiar cloud of perfume, the escalators carry people upstairs to women’s lingerie and hand-painted porcelain or straight to the restaurant floor with a view of the skyline. More space, more air, the stink is gone. “Galeria” is now written on the facade, and the g in the brand logo forms a flower.
