Galaxy Z Flip4 and Fold4: Samsung is redesigning its folding smartphones

With the Galaxy Z Flip4 and the Z Fold4, Samsung is showing the next generation of its smartphones with a foldable display. The cameras in particular have been improved.

From niche to mass market: Samsung sees this development in smartphones with a foldable display and, according to marketing boss Mario Winter, wants to sell around 500,000 such devices in Germany this year. While the competition usually doesn’t even bring their folders to Europe, but only sells them in China, the Koreans have now presented the fourth generation of their Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold models. The two devices, which are scheduled to go on sale on August 26, have been revised, especially in the details.

The compact Flip4, which weighs just 183 grams, now has a thinner flap hinge, and the edges of the display, which is still 6.7 inches when unfolded, have become narrower. The small front display is unchanged at 1.9 inches. As with the Fold4, the case is waterproof in accordance with IPX8 for 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 meters.

There is also more performance, since the fastest Qualcomm processor Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is now used. The capacity of the battery has increased from 3,300 to 3,700 mAh, and faster charging with 25 watts is now possible. The main sensor of the double camera on the flap still has a resolution of 12 megapixels, but it has now been given a brighter sensor. The second 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and 10-megapixel selfiecam in the main display remain unchanged.

Prices start at 1099 francs with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of data storage, plus there are versions with 256 GB for 1159 francs and 512 GB for 1259 francs. As with the predecessor, in addition to the four standard colors there is also a Bespoke Edition, in which the housing and the frame can be customized in 75 color combinations.

Galaxy Z Fold4: The big brother

The triple camera on the back of the Galaxy Z Fold4 has been revised. It now shows the same parameters as the Galaxy S22: the resolution of the main lens increases to 50 megapixels, the zoom lens now works triple instead of double optical. The 12-megapixel wide-angle lens remains unchanged.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, which is supported by 12 GB of RAM, is now also used in the Galaxy Z Fold4. The inner Amoled display with 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate remains unfolded at a size of 7.6 inches. The outer Amoled screen measures 6.2 inches, and the edges have also become slightly narrower here. It is the first model ever to use Android version 12L with optimized functions for devices with larger screens.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 costs 1799 francs with 256 GB of data storage, and 1899 francs with 512 GB. Only in the Samsung online shop is there another variant with a terabyte of memory for CHF 2,099.
