The rumor that Apple is working on a satellite connection for its devices has persisted for some time. That’s how the rumor started among other things shortly before the iPhone 13 announcement. We now know that this technology did not make it into the current iPhone generation. But what about the upcoming iPhone 14 or future Apple Watch models?
Bloomberg: future Apple Watch models will receive satellite connection
While the iPhone was primarily associated with a satellite connection, it seems that the Apple Watch will also be treated to a corresponding technology in the future.
In the latest issue of the Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman hints that the Apple Watch is also destined to have this functionality. The usually well-informed Apple insider expects the technology to be implemented this year or next. It’s called
Whether on the iPhone or the Apple Watch, the technology would offer an alternative to Garmin inReach Explorer and SPOT. These are portable satellite communication devices with similar functions.
There have been signs of late that Apple and its apparent satellite partner Globalstar Inc. may be getting closer to launching such a feature. In February, Globalstar announced it had reached an agreement to purchase 17 new satellites to provide “continuous satellite services” to a “potential” — and unnamed — customer who had paid it hundreds of millions of dollars.
Apple is rumored to announce three new Apple Watch models this year. A clock should be aimed at extreme athletes. Here it might make sense to implement an emergency function. The emergency function should only work in areas without cell phone coverage and only in selected markets.
Don’t get me wrong: the satellite connection should not be intended for making phone calls. Emergencies should be reported or short texts to emergency contacts should be made possible. Gurman speaks parallel to the Apple Watch in his latest newsletter also about new Macs.
