Furniture design: Bier shaped this table – Panorama

Alcohol isn’t always a solution. But sometimes it is: To remove a grease stain from oak wood, simply mix 200 milliliters of beer with a teaspoon of safflower oil and polish the piece of furniture with a soft cloth. Note: Beer is not only an effective intoxicant, but also a practical household helper, as you can read about in forums under the keyword “ingenious barley juice life hacks”. The miracle cure is also said to remove rust stains, and you can also use it as a hair conditioner or snail trap.

So you can handle beer on furniture, at least when you’re sober, but with beer furniture? How should it work? A beer table is usually a table where you can sit and drink, not a table made of beer. But the Swiss designer Noemi Niederhauser has now presented tables and stools made from brewery waste at the Milan Furniture Fair. “Waste matter” is what she calls the plywood-like material obtained from draff, the malt residue left after the beer is first brewed.

The organic material is rich in protein and can be pressed into a kind of ecological chipboard with the help of binding agents. Niederhauser’s furniture is reminiscent of oversized beer coasters that were experimentally put together by slightly tipsy creatives. One could describe the style as tasty and get into an aesthetic frenzy, especially if you consume two or three bottles of beer while watching. You can drink anything, including a table. And the more beer you swallow, the more raw material you produce for the furniture. Recycling can hardly be nicer. Bottom up!
