With “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” the one-armed Amazon from “Fury Road” returns to the end times. What can viewers expect?

In 2015, cinema audiences got to know Imperator Furiosa as the one-armed embodiment of an Amazon with close-cropped hair and black war paint. Although Tom Hardy (46) played the taciturn title hero for the first time in “Mad Max: Fury Road” instead of Mel Gibson (68), Charlize Theron (48) stole the spotlight thanks to her fervent performance with Full throttle the show. From May 23rd, in George Miller’s (79) prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”, the audience will finally find out how an innocent girl became the war-experienced Furiosa, who is in the service of the monster Immortan Joe.

Battle of the tyrants – that’s what it’s about

When the world ends, the young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy, 28) is kidnapped from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a massive biker horde led by the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth, 40). As they wander through the wasteland, they come across the citadel, which is ruled by Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants battle for dominance, Furiosa must endure perilous trials while gathering the means to find her way home.

Without Max, but again with maximum bombast

As the main villain of “Furiosa”, Marvel star Chris Hemsworth is allowed to let off steam with mischievous joy. Contrary to initial assumptions and despite the visual similarity, he does not embody the young version of the “Fury Road” antagonist Immortan Joe, but a previously completely unknown character. And since nothing seems to unite people in the Wasteland like a common enemy, Hemsworth’s Dementus plays a key role in Furiosa ultimately becoming Immortan Joe’s right (albeit one-armed) hand. In other words, the enforcer we got to know, fear and love almost ten years ago.

At the latest when Taylor-Joy’s hair and arm disappear and she reaches for the motor oil war paint, it becomes clear why she was chosen as the young version of Theron. Not despite, but precisely because of her delicate, almost fairy-like stature, her transformation carries a special tragedy. The end times know no mercy and what doesn’t kill you makes you more furious.

Since Max Rockatansky and Imperator Furiosa only crossed paths – or rather drove into each other – during the plot of “Fury Road”, fans will logically have to do without the furious man in the prequel. But not without the typical Miller horsepower bombast and the many practical effects that should definitely be experienced in the cinema.
