Fund on the Isar: The double destruction of the Munich synagogue – Munich

In 1938 the Nazis had the magnificent building in the old town demolished, and eleven years after the war the partially decorated stones were used to repair a weir on the Isar. Now they have reappeared during excavation work. But what happens to the remains?

Emanuel Kirschner retired as cantor of the Munich main synagogue in 1926. But on June 8, 1938, at the request of the chairman of the Jewish community, the 81-year-old came back to the church to sing. It is clear that this will be his last appearance – at the last service ever in the magnificent building erected in 1887 on Herzog-Max-Straße. Because in the morning the city informed the Jewish community that the synagogue would be torn down the following day. The order for this comes from Adolf Hitler himself.
