Callum Hudson-Odoi talks about his frustrating time at Chelsea and new strength at Bayer Leverkusen.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has admitted his rare appearances under Thomas Tuchel left him extremely frustrated. Since moving to Bayer Leverkusen, he feels like a new person.

The 21-year-old winger struggled for minutes under the now-fired Chelsea manager and eventually joined Bayer Leverkusen on a season’s loan. A purchase option was not agreed, however, as the Blues continue to plan with their own growth.

In a conversation with the Daily Mail Hudson-Odoi now emphasized that he didn’t blame Tuchel for anything, even if he admitted that he was frustrated by his limited commitments.

“It was one of those difficult moments where you look at yourself and you’re like, ‘What am I doing wrong? Did I do something wrong that I’m not even in the squad?'” he said of not being nominated for the first Gameday.

“I would never say anything bad about Thomas, he was a good guy, a good coach. But the first game of the season was frustrating. Any footballer who isn’t in the squad will understand how frustrating it is,” lamented the youngster .

“Regular playing time gives you consistency and the more games you play, the more consistent you become, the better your form,” said Hudson-Odoi. “You feel fresher, you feel better, you feel… not that you’re being treated fairly, but that you have the confidence of the coach to push you and take you further. You don’t want to sit on the bench and think : ‘Why don’t I play?’ And then it takes weeks and weeks and your legs get rusty when you play. The most important thing is consistency. That’s what I get here and it makes me feel better.”

“Now that I’m playing there’s a momentum and a feeling of refreshment: a new country, a whole new experience. It’s definitely refreshing to know that I have the opportunity to play week after week, to enjoy and smile!”

Boehly denied purchase option at Leahdeal

Hudson-Odoi also opened up about his conversation with new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, who, while willing to accept a move on loan, made it clear he was not interested in the youngster’s permanent exit.

“When a club tries to lose a player [auf Leihbasis] “Todd said, ‘Listen, we want you here’.” From the summer of 2023, his future will probably lie with Chelsea again.
