While the railways are on strike: the weather service warns of the “danger of black ice” in many parts of Germany
The German Weather Service has warned of slippery roads due to freezing rain for large parts of North Rhine-Westphalia

The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of slippery roads for the west, southwest and central Germany until Friday afternoon. “There is an increased risk of slippery conditions due to freezing rain. Danger of black ice,” reports the DWD on its website.

For a strip from the Jade Bay to Lake Constance, stretching from Germany’s western border to Hanover, Erfurt and Ulm, a warning of significant slippery conditions has been in effect since the night. In the affected regions there is also freezing Rain and some light snow expected. In the west there will be light frost down to minus five degrees, in the south and southeast there will be moderate frost down to minus nine degrees.

“Freezing rain with black ice forming in areas from the west. The focus is from the Eifel over the Sauerland to East Westphalia,” says the DWD weather report. Restrictions on road traffic are possible. The warning is valid in many places until Friday at 1 p.m., and in parts of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria until 3 p.m. According to the weather service, freezing rain in the mountains can also turn into snow. Snow amounts of one to five centimeters are possible.
DWD and ADAC recommend staying at home
The DWD recommends avoiding unnecessary time outdoors and driving, adapting your behavior in traffic and planning for delays and disruptions. Switching to the train is hardly possible because of the train drivers’ warning strike this Friday.
“Anyone who has the opportunity to work from home should take advantage of it,” said an ADAC spokesman for the German Press Agency, also with a view to the weather situation. “Because you can’t rely on the alternative option of trains,” he added.
