From the evidence room: Hayley Dodd’s earring

A young woman disappears without a trace. It takes the police 14 years to find the key clue: in the evidence room

The day before Hayley Dodd disappears forever, she sends her parents a postcard. “I’m fine, the weather up here is excellent,” writes the 17-year-old. It ends with: “Take care, much love, Hayley.” It is the last sign of life that the parents from Mandurah on Australia’s west coast get from their daughter.

In July 1999, Hayley Dodd traveled through the state of Western Australia with her friend, 21-year-old Lisa Frederickson. The two work here and there, for them the trip is a great adventure. To get from one place to another, they hitchhike. The two friends have an agreement: They only get in when older people or truckers are behind the wheel. They think it’s safer. Besides, there are two of them.

But on July 29, 1999, things are different. Hayley Dodd sets off alone. She wants to visit a friend and travels from Dongara to Moora, a distance of about 215 kilometers. Lisa Frederickson gives her a pocketknife and a few dollars so Hayley can call once she gets there. But Lisa waits in vain for the call. Hayley will never reach her friend’s farm.
