The Saudi Crown Prince is making a comeback this summer. It is his first trip outside of the Gulf region in years. Earlier this week, Mohammed bin Salman visited Egypt and Jordan before traveling to Turkey – to his former nemesis, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. For years, the two regional powers fought for leadership in the Islamic world: while Ankara supported the movements of political Islam after the Arab Spring in 2011, Riyadh financed the counter-revolution of the Arab autocrats.
