From Annalisa to Ricchi e Poveri, Italy brings its big stars to compete before Eurovision

Never seen ! From February 6 to 10, 2024, for the 74th edition of the Sanremo Festival (Italy), thirty pieces will be in competition (compared to twenty-six last year, which was already a record). The winner, in addition to having the honor of having their name added to the list of this Italian music institution, will be asked to represent Italy at Eurovision 2024 in Malmö, Sweden. He or she may refuse, the RAI and the delegation would then make their choice among the other participants.

Proof that this is a serious matter, the list of artists who will perform on the stage of L’Ariston in Sanremo was revealed at midday this Sunday, during TG1, the RAI television news . The official names are enough to arouse enthusiasm.

Loredana Bertè, 73, will be in the running

Starting with Annalisa, 38 years old, who will participate in the competition for the sixth time since 2013, undoubtedly the most popular female artist currently in Italy. His latest album, E poi siamo finiti nel vorticereleased at the end of September, ranked number 1, driven in particular by the song My love, one of the successes of recent months on the other side of the Alps. The pop rock group The Kolors will also be there after having scored one of the biggest hits of the summer, ITALODISCO (remained at the top of the Top 50 for ten consecutive weeks).

The rapper Geolier, 23, who is a hit with his second album released in January, The heart of the baby, four weeks in a row number 1 in bestsellers, was also selected. Fiorella Mannoia, 69 years old, will compete for the sixth time in her career, and Loredana Bertè, 73 years old, for the twelfth time.

If these artists were among those that the rumor predicted, this is not the case of Ricchi e Poveri, famous throughout the world for Sarà perché ti amo (5th at the Sanremo Festival in 1981), whose participation is a surprise. The group has already competed twelve times, and triumphed once (in 1985 with Se innamoro), but its last appearance in the competition dates back to 1992.

More than 12 million people watched the Sanremo final in 2023

A handful of artists who have previously won Sanremo will attempt to add a new title to their list of achievements. Among them, a certain number are familiar to Eurovision faithful in recent years: Emma, who represented Italy in 2014, Il Volo (2015), Mahmood (2019 and 2022) and Diodato (who should have participate in the 2020 edition, canceled due to the pandemic) thus have a chance to win a ticket to Malmö.

However, for the Italian public, the prospect of Eurovision is secondary. The Sanremo Festival is indeed the flagship event in its eyes: the final of the last edition, on February 11, was followed by 12.3 million viewers on RAI, an audience share of 67 %. Mythical, we tell you.
