FritzOS 7.56: Firmware update introduces change assistants

AVM provides the FritzOS version 7.56 for the DSL router Fritzbox 7590 AX and the cable models 6591, 6660 and 6690. In the update overview, the company highlights two innovations compared to the previous versions 7.51 and 7.50: a new power-saving mode and an assistant that helps when switching to a new Fritzbox.

The new power-saving mode hides a new central settings page in the web interface (energy monitor), which combines the energy settings that have been available for a long time in one place and can be activated with a single collective switch. It throttles the WLAN as well as the LAN and USB interfaces, which leads to slightly lower electrical power consumption. For example, the Ethernet ports then only transfer 100 instead of 1000 Mbit/s.

Experience has shown that the fractional watts gained are in an unfavorable ratio to the loss of performance. Using a Fritzbox 7590, we measured in 2019 that each throttled LAN port saves 0.3 watts, but this only makes sense on connections for smart TVs or printers, for example, that do not require a high transmission rate.

Meanwhile, a new assistant should make it easier to switch to new Fritz boxes. He according to AVM, it takes over all the important settings of the previously used router including connected DECT telephones and other manufacturer products, such as smart home devices. You could export the configuration status of the old Fritzbox to a file and import it to the new router for a long time, but then you still had to check some settings and adjust them manually if necessary. The new assistant does the same, but also brings DECT cordless telephones (Fritzfons) and Fritz repeaters connected to the old router to the new box. Until now, you had to reconnect such Fritz peripherals manually.

The update to FritzOS 7.56 can be done with the Fritzboxes 7590 AX, 6591, 6660 and 6690 via the web interface at http://fritz.box nudge. Alternatively AVM offers corresponding images for download.
