turning point. When someone used to say “director”, they thought of Friedrich Nowottny, Klaus Bölling or Fritz Pleitgen. People didn’t think so much about authorities, expensive institutions, overstretched committees or even corruption, but about journalism. That’s remarkable, because nowadays one thinks less and less of journalism when one hears job descriptions such as editor-in-chief, program director or artistic director. Today one thinks of Patricia Schlesinger and massage seats. That’s unfair? Yes, it is. But it will determine the perception of public service broadcasting, especially ARD, for years to come.
