Friedrich Merz, the tipping figure: How the CDU leader fails

Friedrich Merz finds no line in dealing with the AfD. The man who was supposed to unite the CDU suddenly becomes a burden himself. How should this continue?

Recently in the Adenauer House: Friedrich Merz is sitting in his executive office at the CDU headquarters and is looking forward to relaxing for a few days. Reading, switching off, doing a bit of sport, that’s the plan for the summer. His shoulder, which bothered him for a long time after a fall last year, is halfway okay again.

Merz, 67, leans in an armchair, stretches his legs forward, folds his arms behind his head, so expansive, as if he wanted to show that everything is working motorically again. He laughs. The summer can come. Finally a break from all this madness.

Switch off? Break? think.
