Last year’s finalist Casper Ruud and youngster Holger Rune mastered their next tasks at the French Open with nerves of steel and, like last year, will meet in a Scandinavian quarterfinals.

In a spectacular fight lasting almost four hours, the 20-year-old Dane Rune defeated the Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo by. “It was so much fun,” Rune gushed. “Moments like this stay forever.”

Previously, the Norwegian Ruud, who was four years his senior, had defeated the strong Nicolas Jarry from Chile 7:6 (7:3), 7:5, 7:5. Last year, Ruud and Rune met in the quarterfinals of the clay court classic in Paris – at that time Ruud had the better end in four sets.

The fourth in the world rankings had to fight a lot against Jarry in 3:20 hours, but kept the upper hand in the decisive situations of the sentences. The Chilean had recently defeated Alexander Zverev in the semifinals of the preparatory tournament in Geneva and won the title.

Ruud is fourth in the clay court classic and lost to Rafael Nadal in last year’s final in his 14th French Open triumph. The Spaniard is missing in Paris due to injury and will be out for around five months after hip surgery.
