French media: too much room for the right? – Media

The violent unrest in France after the killing of the youth Nahel M. by a police officer has abated again; but the discussions about questions like these continue: How could there be another riot, with hundreds injured, shops looted and enormous damage to property? What role does the structural disadvantage of people from immigrant families in French suburbs play? Where are the roots of police violence?

The current episode of quoted is dedicated to a topic that has wrongly not been the focus of public debate about recent events: the responsibility of the media for the escalations.

How can it be that right-wing agitators are always present in some broadcasters and publications, while differentiated voices often have a hard time getting through?

Are the allegations made by the French writer Diaty Diallo, for example, justified: that many media reports “dehumanize” people in the suburbs? And where does the increasing willingness to use violence against journalists come from?

Quoted host, SZ author and France expert Nils Minkmar and Léonardo Kahn talk about this. The journalist was a freelance Paris correspondent from 2020-22, is doing an audio traineeship at the Süddeutsche Zeitung and is an expert on the French media world.
