Almost five months before the state elections, the Free Voters (FW) confirmed their state chairman Hubert Aiwanger in office with 95 percent. Aiwanger received 112 out of 118 valid votes at a state assembly in Amberg. According to FW, there were six no votes and no abstentions. In his speech, Aiwanger warned of a possible return to a CSU government and described the FW as the real driving force in the current coalition. “The CSU must not govern alone. It’s good for Bavaria if we have a four-eyes principle,” he said. “Without us, Bayern would be governed worse today than with us, and that’s why we have to be back in the autumn.” That is probably the only concern that the free voters have at the moment: that the CSU could ultimately get the absolute majority of the seats in the state parliament. If this does not happen, a continuation of the coalition that has been in office since 2018 is almost a foregone conclusion.
In his speech, Aiwanger launched a verbal sweeping attack against the federal government and the traffic light parties. “The traffic light has to go, the sooner the better, by 2025 at the latest.” He would not have believed that a country could be “governed down” in two years like this. “Germany is now suffering from an ideological whiplash of red-green-yellow,” said Aiwanger, criticizing the federal government’s energy policy in particular. Aiwanger went so far as to accuse the Greens of calculating in order to drive citizens who were frustrated with their policies to join the AfD. “I believe that there is a certain calculation involved in provoking the good middle-class voters who voted for the center parties in the past in such a way that they end up voting for the AfD out of frustration. Then they have achieved what they want : Because the stronger the AfD, the more certain the Greens will be in government.” Green parliamentary group leader Katharina Schulze countered: “What Aiwanger is saying is just ridiculous. He constantly ignites his statements against queer people, people who care about nature and people who think differently than he does. And now he comes up with crazy myths around the corner, what nonsense.” The people of Bavaria not only deserve better government, but also a new style of government.
The FDP wanted Aiwanger to be kicked out of parliament in the state elections on October 8th. “The FDP betrayed us,” he said, the FDP is the biggest disappointment in the federal government and does “every crap” from red-green. “And that’s why the FDP no longer has any place in this Bavarian state parliament,” he called into the hall. The free voters are definitely “the better option”.
