Fraud trial against mayor of Seeg: Defense attorney admits “fatal mistakes” – Bavaria

At the end of the first day of the trial against the mayor of Seeg, Markus Berktold, one could observe a scene that only the completely hard-hearted would have left unmoved. The CSU politician, who was accused of, among other things, commercial fraud – has been in custody for almost eleven months – had just had his ankle bracelets put back on. After seven hours of negotiations, his defense attorney Robert Chasklowicz offered the 49-year-old two remaining pieces of nut wafers from a larger bag, apparently to strengthen him. This was abruptly stopped by a sergeant. The case is being heard in the large hall of the Nuremberg regional court, but the official’s reasoning was also understandable in the audience: “Let’s not even start that.” Berktold then waved to his family in the audience with a comforting hand gesture. Then we went back to custody.
