Fraport wants to keep building – economy

The airport operator Fraport still sees itself on the right track with its expansion plans for Frankfurt Airport despite the Corona crisis. With the new passenger terminal 3, Frankfurt can accommodate the growth of German air traffic in the coming decades, said CEO Stefan Schulte at the general meeting of the MDax group. He is not aware of any comparable expansion plans at other locations in Germany. In the final stage of expansion, up to 25 million passengers can be handled in the T3. At the start of operations in spring 2026, the capacity should be 19 million.

In the pre-crisis year of 2019, Fraport looked after more than 70 million guests in the two existing terminals. The construction of the T3 was not stopped during the Corona crisis. Despite rising construction prices, the costs are still within planning, said Schulte. The CEO also defended the plans to close and renovate the aging Terminal 2 when the new building goes into operation. Schulte said: “We’re not talking about demolition there.” The refurbishment was necessary after 30 years for ecological and economic reasons. After two to three years, Terminal 2 will also go back into operation. In only two speeches, shareholder representatives complained that Fraport once again held its Annual General Meeting online. Fraport AG is majority owned by the state of Hesse and the city of Frankfurt.
