Franziska Giffey is the new Governing Mayor of Berlin
SPD leader Franziska Giffey has been elected mayor of Berlin. She is the first woman in this position, which has existed since 1951. Giffey got 84 votes. The new Senate is to be sworn in during the course of the day.
The Berlin House of Representatives has SPD boss Franziska Giffey elected mayoress on Tuesday. Giffey, who with the SPD narrowly won the elections in September, is the first woman in this office. After the election, Giffey formed a coalition with the Greens and Leftists.
The 43-year-old received 84 yes votes, 52 MPs voted no. 139 MPs were present for the plenary session, eight MPs were absent for health reasons. The coalition of the SPD, Greens and Left received 87 votes, the opposition 52 votes. For the calculation of the majority, however, the number of all members of the Berlin parliament counted – that is, 147.
Giffey already has a steep political career behind him. Within a few years she rose from the education councilor in Berlin’s Neukölln district to the office of district mayor to federal family minister. In May she resigned as minister in the wake of a plagiarism affair that cost her a doctorate.
As the top candidate in the House of Representatives election, Giffey achieved the historically worst result for the Berlin Social Democrats with 21.4 percent. At the same time, however, she secured the SPD’s election victory over the Greens, CDU, Left, AfD and FDP.
Red-green-red coalition agreement signed
Previously, the SPD, the Greens and the Left had theirs on Tuesday morning after almost three months of negotiation Coalition agreement signed.
Eleven top politicians from the three parties, including Giffey, signed the government program in the State Library in Berlin-Mitte. It should form the basis for further cooperation over the next five years.
Miller’s term of office ended
After her election, Giffey goes to the Red Town Hall to take over the official duties there from her predecessor Michael Müller. Then the appointed new senators.
The new government then drives back to the House of Representatives, where the senators are to be sworn in shortly before 1 p.m.
At 4 p.m., Franziska Giffey will be represented as the elected governing mayor of Berlin at the Prime Minister’s Conference. After that, without a fixed time, the new Senate wants to hold a constituent session. The House of Representatives is now moving on to day-to-day parliamentary business. Among other things, further measures to combat the corona pandemic are to be decided.
