Franz Marc Museum receives the “Donkey Frieze” from Franz Marc as a donation – Bavaria

The Franz Marc Foundation is pleased about the donation of the painting “Donkey Frieze” by Franz Marc. The painting from 1911 had previously been on display in the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See, where it is one of the favorite works of museum visitors, but belonged to Karl-Heinz Selbach. The valuable donation was made possible by an unnamed patron. The work represents an important step in the painter’s artistic development. The frieze-like arrangement of the animals as in an Egyptian relief and the purple color of the donkeys not only make them “representatives of their kind, but connect them with the larger context and the inner one order of nature,” says the museum. The painting was ceremoniously handed over in the presence of Karl-Heinz Selbach and Elisabeth zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, who heads the Franz Marc Foundation.
