A hand grenade in the Hauptwache train station caused concern in Frankfurt am Main this morning. Now the police have released pictures of a suspect.

After a hand grenade was found at Frankfurt’s Hauptwache subway and S-Bahn station on Tuesday morning, the police in the Main metropolis are now searching for a suspect using images from surveillance cameras.

The footage shows the man inside the underground train station. He was wearing white sports shoes, dark pants, a dark hoodie with “EA7” written on it and a hat with a light peak. His face was covered with a mouth and nose mask.

The wanted man is suspected of having placed the hand grenade in the train station at 4:36 a.m. He then fled in the direction of Eschenheimer Tor, north of the main guard station.

Rush hour traffic in Frankfurt affected by hand grenade discovery

Passers-by discovered the hand grenade around two hours later and informed the police (the star reported). Specialists from the Hessian State Criminal Police Office have rendered the explosive weapon harmless. Trains passed through the station without stopping and the surrounding area was cordoned off. The Hauptwache station is one of the busiest in the Main metropolis; several subway and S-Bahn lines intersect here.

The hand grenade should be further examined by forensic scientists. The pin to detonate the grenade was still there, a police spokesman told the DPA news agency. It was initially not known whether there were any explosives left in it.

The background to the process is still completely unclear. “There are currently no indications of a motive related to the Middle East conflict,” the police said.

The Frankfurt police ask: Who knows the person pictured or can provide information about their whereabouts? The police will receive information on (069) 75553110 or any other police station.
