Franconia and Upper Palatinate: Storm “Zeynep” ensures numerous operations – Bavaria

The storm Zeynep has ensured numerous rescue service operations in northern Bavaria. The emergency services were mostly deployed because of fallen trees, fallen traffic signs and objects flying around, the police said on Saturday.

In the Upper Palatinate there were 14 accidents in which drivers were no longer able to avoid them in time and drove into fallen trees and larger branches. One person was slightly injured. In total, the police in the Upper Palatinate registered 83 traffic disruptions during the night that can be attributed to the storm.

A tree fell on a production hall in Kulmbach, Upper Franconia. According to initial estimates, the damage to the building is around 100,000 euros, said a police spokeswoman.

Between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday, the police in Upper Franconia recorded 156 weather-related operations. Here, too, it was mostly objects being thrown around, as well as trees and branches on the road, which caused minor damage. The number of fire brigade operations is significantly higher, since the police are not alerted to all tree felling work, it said.

In Nuremberg, the fire brigade secured the area around the Lorenzkirche. There roof tiles had come loose from the nave of the church and slammed onto the forecourt. The fire brigade was also on duty in Middle Franconia because of numerous fallen trees and broken branches.

While the rescue workers in Franconia and Upper Palatinate have been on dozens of missions since Friday evening, the rest of the Free State has remained largely calm. In Lower Bavaria, the police responded to the storm 17 times. However, the operations were unproblematic, said a police spokesman. Among other things, a construction fence was blown over by the wind. In Swabia and Upper Bavaria, the police recorded only a few storm operations.
