Macron or Le Pen? It’s like choosing between two evils, say many French people, especially young and left-leaning ones. And they’re still saying it, even though the national-populist challenger has a real chance of defeating the liberal incumbent in Sunday’s casting vote. Many of them, such as the author Didier Eribon, who is also known in Germany, want to abstain from voting out of sheer disgust against Macron – and in doing so may help Le Pen to triumph. One as bad as the other? This equation is immensely irritating. Anyone who lumps the two opponents together has lost their bearings.
