The outcome of the first round of the French presidential election is not good news for Berlin and Brussels. The candidates Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who are critical of Germany and the EU, together get more votes than the EU enthusiast Emmanuel Macron. Should Le Pen succeed in defeating Macron in the runoff, this would radically change France’s European and neighborhood policy. But the question is whether there really is a clear anti-European message hidden behind this fact.
