“Freedom to abortion” is included in the French constitution – a worldwide first. The members of both chambers of parliament voted in favor with a large majority.

France is the first country in the world to include “freedom to have an abortion” in its constitution. The members of both chambers of parliament gave the green light to President Emmanuel Macron’s project with a clear majority.

780 parliamentarians voted yes, 72 voted no. Afterwards, almost all of the representatives and senators present rose and applauded while standing. Several speakers celebrated their vote as historic. Both chambers of parliament, the National Assembly and the Senate, had already approved the bill individually.

The majority of French people were in favor of it

Article 34 of the Constitution sets out “the guaranteed freedom of women to have an abortion”. According to polls, 86 percent of French people support the complete liberalization of abortion. Abortion opponents condemned the new regulation.

Abortions up to the tenth week of pregnancy have been unpunished in France since 1975. Pregnant women in France can now have an abortion up to the 14th week; the costs are covered by the health insurance company.
