Monday marked the 15th anniversary of the United Nations LGBTQI Group. On this occasion, France created a support fund which will be used by its embassies to defend the rights of LGBT+ people around the world, announced Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna.
“It was the first time that a French Minister of Foreign Affairs participated in this group,” said spokesperson Anne-Claire Legendre.
The “universal decriminalization of homosexuality”
The fund is endowed with 2 million euros “so that our embassies support those who defend the rights of LGBT+ people on a daily basis and all over the world, sometimes at the risk of their lives,” she said.
France also reiterated on Monday “its commitment to the universal decriminalization of homosexuality and the defense of the rights of LGBT+ people”. In the fall of 2022, she appointed an ambassador for LGBT rights, Jean-Marc Berthon, a first in the history of French diplomacy.
