Greek Vice-President of the European Parliament Eva Kaili and three other people were charged and imprisoned on Sunday December 11 in Belgium in an investigation into suspicions of corruption in connection with Qatar within this institution of the European Union (EU) , a judicial source told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Four people were imprisoned after being charged by a Brussels investigating judge for “belonging to a criminal organization, money laundering and corruption”, confirmed the federal prosecutor’s office in a press release, without however revealing the identity of the persons implicated. Two other people were released by the judge.

According to information from WorldPier Antonio Panzeri, 67, former Italian MEP from the Social Democrats group and president of the NGO Fight Impunity, as well as Francesco Giorgi, a former parliamentary assistant and companion of Mme Kaili, are among those charged. Also indicted, Luca Visentini, general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), was conditionally released.

No parliamentary immunity
