Four people died in an avalanche that broke out this Saturday in the town of Valloire in the area of the Col du Galibier, in Savoie, according to a provisional report communicated by the prefecture of the department. Two groups of hikers were swept away, some of whose members were found unharmed, a spokesperson told AFP.

Six soldiers from the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM), two helicopters and two avalanche dogs were hired to help the victims.

Softening of temperatures and increased risks

“Research is currently continuing to ensure that no other victim has been buried,” added the prefecture in its press release.

The authorities had warned Friday against a risk of avalanches “particularly high” this weekend as temperatures have softened after heavy snowfall in the mountains of Savoy in recent days.

Five people had already lost their lives on Monday in two avalanches in Isère and in the Hautes-Alpes.
