Almost four months after the closure of the media library in Pissevin, the city of Nîmes announced its intention to open a library space in another less isolated location in the district. On June 6, the media library was closed following intrusions by traffickers into the establishment, searches by agents and growing insecurity in a neighborhood plagued by drug trafficking.
The next day, an M6 journalist who came to report was violently attacked. This district of the Gard prefecture has also been the scene of numerous shootings with heavy weapons for several months. One of them caused the death of a ten-year-old child, a collateral victim of these turf wars.
“Drug trafficking and insecurity remain prevalent”
The city of Nîmes recognizes “the inability to reopen the Marc-Bernard media library, where drug trafficking and insecurity remain prevalent”. But she decided to “maintain the presence of library agents in order to continue their public service mission to the population,” explains Sophie Roulle, deputy delegate for Culture. Thanks to their mobilization, this space will offer a peaceful place dedicated to the pleasure of reading. »
As for the media library, elected officials hope to reopen it “quickly”. A wishful thinking for the moment, while trafficking continues in the neighborhood.
