A shooting in the state of Colorado in the United States has left five dead, including the gunman who was shot by law enforcement and a police officer, and three injured, US police said on Monday, according to which the shooter’s motives remain unknown.

From Monday afternoon, the man opened fire at several locations in neighboring towns of Denver and
Lakewoodpolice said at a late-night press conference.

The shooter “declared dead on the scene”

The gunman first opened fire in Denver, killing two women and a man, while another was injured. He then traveled to Lakewood where he shot one man and injured another, police said.

Using information from the first attack, officers at Lakewood were able to identify the perpetrator, who moved again. “Shots were then exchanged with our agents” and “the shooter (…) was shot,” said John Romero, spokesman for the Lakewood police, adding that the author of the shots was “Declared dead at the scene”.

Unknown motivations

During the exchange of gunfire, a Lakewood police officer was shot and wounded. “This officer is currently in the hospital undergoing an operation,” said John Romero.

The shooter’s motives remain unknown, and an investigation into the events is underway. Shootings remain a recurring scourge in the United States, claiming large numbers of victims in a country where the right to own guns is constitutionally guaranteed.
