Max Verstappen wants to start a Formula 1 era with Red Bull, recently extended his contract to 2028 and will be rewarded with a historically princely salary of around 50 million dollars. But: The Dutchman has kept a back door open through which he can leave the “cops” in a certain case.

Formula 1: exit of Verstappen in case of Red Bull crash?

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko confirmed an exit clause in Verstappen’s contract in an interview with Formel1.de. And for a specific scenario: Should Red Bull experience a crash like in 2014, when the racing team had no chance against Mercedes after switching to V6 hybrid engines, it was “clear” that there was a clause for Verstappen to Red Bull to leave, says Marko.

The reigning world champion has been driving for Red Bull since 2016, having previously gone through Marko’s junior program and started his F1 career with sister team Toro Rosso.

Verstappen had repeatedly had performance clauses anchored in the contract at Red Bull even before his most recent long-term extension. The deficit of his car to the Silver Arrows, which had dominated for a long time, was not allowed to exceed a certain mark. Last year, Red Bull delivered the Dutchman a World Cup-capable car for the first time, which Verstappen used directly to win the number one title.
