Let’s continue in Formula 1! After the spectacular race at Silverstone, it’s now off to Spielberg in Austria. Attention: It is a race weekend with sprint qualifying! This means qualifying takes place on Friday and then sprint qualifying on Saturday, where the line-up for the race on Sunday is determined.
Max Verstappen (24) is chasing a record. If the Dutchman wins for the fourth time at the Red Bull Ring after 2018, 2019 and 2021, he would be the sole record holder with four successes ahead of Alain Prost (67), who crossed the finish line first in 1983, 1985 and 1986. The signs are good. The Red Bull driver knows the course at his racing team’s home Grand Prix inside out.

The pole position is important in order to be able to approach the first corner as far to the left as possible at the start. It goes around the corner at around 160 km/h, the apex has to be hit in full so that the drivers can attack the 60 meter climb to curves two and three at top speed right from the start. If this does not succeed, the driver loses valuable time on the fastest lap on the racing calendar.
With a total of three DRS zones, many overtaking maneuvers are possible. In turns one, three and four in particular, the drivers start maneuvering. Also in curve six, which according to Niki Lauda († 70) is “one of the most demanding curves in the international racing circuit” due to the sloping course, some drivers keep trying. In order to be able to start the attack, the pilots shift down two gears. The rest of the track is full throttle apart from two brief periods of braking in turns nine and ten. Nowhere else do drivers get back to the start and finish line faster with a lap time of just over a minute. Especially in qualifying, Verstappen & Co. have to be careful not to leave the track with all four tires, otherwise the lap time will be canceled.
