After a controversial World Cup final between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, Michael Masi was heavily criticized. He was released a few months later.

The 45-year-old disappeared completely from the scene for a long time, recovered and returned to a premier motorsport race for the first time in April 2023. At that time he was present in his new role as chairman of the V8 Supercars Commission. The Australian series has been part of the supporting program of the Formula 1 race in Albert Park for many years.
But Masi can’t do it without Formula 1. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem told the Press Associated (PA) news agency that the Australian can return to the premier motorsport class.
“Then I’ll bring him back.”
“Michael Masi was insulted and abused. He went through hell. “This all happened before I took office, but I will apologize to him and if there is a job at the FIA that he is the right person for, then I will bring him back,” said Ben Sulayem about a comeback former Formula 1 race director.
The former Emirati pilot compares the events in Abu Dhabi 2021 with the World Cup final between England and Germany in London in 1966. “I also received death threats if I didn’t change the World Cup result because people thought I had the power to do so. But all I can say is: Remember the final between England and Germany in 1966. Was it correct to give England 3-2? No. Was the result corrected later? No. Did Germany win the World Cup? No,” said the 62-year-old.
