His name is inextricably linked to the failed car toll: Andreas Scheuer, former transport minister. Now the 49-year-old CSU politician is leaving the Berlin political stage early. His future plans? Unknown.
The former Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer has resigned from his mandate in the Bundestag and is therefore leaving parliament early. “After today, April 1, 2024, I will resign my mandate as a member of the German Bundestag,” said the CSU politician. He would like to thank the many people for their support, loyalty and trust over such a long time.
It was an honor to be able to work for our country and for my homeland.”
The Bundestag confirmed the step. Scheuer resigned from his mandate with effect from April 1st, according to a request from the dpa news agency. It’s not an April Fool’s joke.
Scheuer did not comment on his future plans.
In the Bundestag since 2002
The 49-year-old had in January has already announced that he will no longer run in the next federal election. The CSU said at the time that he had not taken the step lightly. Before that, according to dpa information, there had been repeated skeptical voices in the Lower Bavaria CSU district association about Scheuer’s candidacy again.
The CSU politician had been a member of the Bundestag since 2002, where he represented the Passau constituency. From 2009 to 2013 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, and from December 2013 to 2018 he took over the position of CSU General Secretary alongside the then party leader Horst Seehofer.
The toll debacle
After the 2018 federal election, he became Federal Transport Minister in Angela Merkel’s fourth cabinet. His name is inseparably linked to the failed car toll – the CSU’s former prestige project, which then developed into a debacle costing millions. As a result, Scheuer was seen by many within the CSU as a burden. In 2023, Scheuer handed over the influential post of CSU district chairman in Lower Bavaria to the former district administrator and incumbent Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter.
