“Be my Baby” was her biggest hit and she was an idol for Amy Winehouse. After a short illness, the US singer and former front woman of the girl band The Ronettes, Ronnie Spector, died.
The US singer Ronnie Spector is dead. After a short battle against cancer, she left this world peacefully, the family said in a statement on the artist’s website.
Spector was best known as the lead singer of the Ronettes in the 1960s. She celebrated her greatest successes with songs like “Be My Baby”, “Walking in the Rain” or “Baby, I love you”. The trio had found each other in the late 1950s, in addition to Spector it consisted of her sister Estelle Bennett and her cousin Dedra Talley. The hallmarks were the upturned black hair and body-hugging clothing. In 1967 the Ronettes disbanded after a tour of Germany.
Ronnie Spector was active as a solo singer after her time with the Ronettes and worked with artists such as Bruce Springsteen and the Misfits.

A special person, a good friend
Music greats like Brian Wilson from the Beach Boy expressed dismay at the death of Ronnie Spector. He loved her voice very much, he wrote on Twitter, she was a special person and a good friend.
Ronnie Spector was born Veronica Bennett in New York and was married to the music producer and later convicted murderer Phil Spector from 1968 to 1974. He had produced the Ronettes’ debut album “Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica” in 1964 – five of the twelve songs made it into the US Billboard charts.
Ronnie and Phil Spector’s marriage was not a happy one. Phil Spector mistreated her and locked her in the house they shared, wrote the singer in her autobiography. The marriage was divorced in 1974. Phil Spector was sentenced to 19 years in prison for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson in 2009 and died in prison a year ago.
