Former mayor of Paimpol indicted for aggravated rape

The former UDI mayor of Paimpol and elected opposition member, Jean-Yves de Chaisemartin, was indicted and placed “under strict judicial control” for “aggravated rape” on Friday.

The elected official had been placed in police custody on Wednesday by the soldiers of the Lannion gendarmerie company, said the Saint-Brieuc public prosecutor, Nicolas Heitz, confirming information from the regional press. The gendarmes were seized of an “investigation of the count of rape with administration of a substance to the victim, without his knowledge, to alter his discernment or the control of his acts”, added the prosecutor.

Deeds committed in “the private sphere”

At the end of his police custody, Jean-Yves de Chaisemartin was presented to the Saint-Brieuc prosecutor’s office on Friday morning and “a judicial investigation was opened against him on the count of aggravated rape”, specifies the prosecutor. The elected official was “indicted on this count by the investigating magistrate who placed him under judicial control,” said Nicolas Heitz. According to the magistrate, these would be “facts committed on November 5” in the “private sphere”.

Pursuant to the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the prosecutor indicated that he had referred directly to the liberty and detention judge. “At the end of an adversarial debate, Jean-Yves de Chaisemartin was placed under strict judicial control,” said the prosecutor.

The chosen one contests

“Mr. de Chaisemartin firmly contests the aggravated rape of which a person accuses him and plans to file a complaint for a slanderous denunciation”, his lawyers said in a press release this Saturday morning, denouncing an accusation “inconsistent with regard to the elements of the file, on the medico-legal, toxicological and DNA level ”. The indictment of the chosen one “does not in any way signify the beginning of guilt. He hopes that the investigation procedure will evolve quickly to demonstrate his innocence and restore his honor, ”underline his lawyers, Me Pierre-Alexis Blévin and Me Thomas Jourdain-Demars.

Unhappy candidate for re-election, Jean-Yves de Chaisemartin, 42, mayor of Paimpol from 2008 to 2020, was beaten in the first round by his socialist rival Fanny Chappé in June 2020 in Paimpol where he continued to sit as an elected official in opposition. The elected official was also vice-president of the departmental council of Côtes d’Armor.
